Commercial Jobs - What does ’Commercial’ mean?
What is loosely known as ’the finance industry’ may be the dominant force in the Channel Islands at the moment, but it is by no means the only area to work in. Many of the skills we associate with finance are also needed in general business, where there is a sense of being part of a team that actually makes something or provides a service other than just increasing someone else’s wealth. If you’re happy in the finance sector – and thousands of people are – that’s fine. But the fact is that around 95% of roles that exist in finance can be found in commercial – we have the same roles but in different environments.
To get an idea of the variety of paths you could take, just flick through the yellow pages in the phone book. Many people today are doing jobs that have no direct link with the name of the company and the line of business it is in – for instance, large companies such as Healthspan and Specsavers are not full of people making and selling nutritional supplements and glasses – they’re full of people in payroll, HR, customer service, banking, administration, and accounting as well as dozens of other job titles.
Guernsey has a fairly diverse range of industries. A random selection of AP Commercial’s recent vacancies included Kitchen Designer, Management Accountant, Retail Assistant, HR Officer and Spanish-speaking Banking Assistant. While the opportunity for a Spanish speaker might be a relatively rare one, it represents the sort of unusual roles that crop up from time to time, where an individual’s natural gifts, attributes and acquired skills can suddenly make him or her an ideal candidate. In other words, you never know when there is going to be a vacancy with your name on it.
