Guernsey and Jersey Temporary and Contract Work at AP Commercial

Flexibility can be an important attribute in these uncertain economic conditions: having more than one string to your bow can mean that when one door closes, another one opens. One way of achieving this can be to think about a career which can span several different industries. Obviously a conventional career involves doing much the same thing for a long period of time, possibly moving to a new company from time to time and progressing up the ladder. But what if your career was comprised of a succession of short-term positions?

Temporary and contract work has benefits for both parties: employer and temp. For the employer, a good temp plugs a gap that enables the company to function as normal while a member of staff is away for whatever reason: illness, maternity leave etc.  For the temp there are the benefits of variety; taking your basic skills and talents into different areas on a regular basis. If the thought of spending your working life under one roof for years on end doesn’t appeal to you, you could be one of nature’s temps – and there is a good living to be made in this way.

Assignments can range from one day to several months, and offers a weekly payday. Temporary and contract work offers you the flexibility to work when you want to, and gain a host of skills that just wouldn’t be learnt within a permanent position. It’s a great way to earn money while trying to decide which direction to take your career in, and is a useful employment route when you have specialised within a certain field but want to move around more.

Temping tends to be associated with recruitment firms, rather than individuals marketing themselves for short-term positions, because there are always arrangements to be made for the next assignment, so you need to have someone looking ahead on your behalf.

Claire Amy is responsible for the temporary and contract assignments at AP Commercial, which deals with the commercial world, i.e. industries that involve making and selling things or providing services, outside the finance sector. ’Our most recent vacancies have included secretaries, receptionists, administrators and telephone order clerks, among others,’ she says. ’There is always something different coming in, so someone who enjoys variety and has the ability to adapt quickly to new working environments can have a really worthwhile career. Temps are always meeting new people, learning new things, and every assignment is like a fresh start.’
